Recapturing Sunday

On the 7th July 2006, the Government announced that it would not proceed with legislation to extend Sunday

trading hours. This decision followed an intense battle with major retailers, some of which strongly supported 24/7 trading throughout the United Kingdom.

Although the Government were supportive of a complete relaxation of the trading laws, in the end they had to

acknowledge that opposition to a change was far greater than they expected, hence the significant Uturn.

Opposition to a change came from the public, retailers, shop workers, MPs and churches.

We need your help. The Society’s Council wish to maintain this momentum, and, therefore, have decided to begin a five-year plan to ‘Recapture Sunday’. Some may conclude this to be an impossible task, but we

believe the Christian church has been on the defensive far too long, and the time has come to take the initiative.

The Council are setting aside £75,000 for the project. This is over and above our day-to-day expenditure. We are hoping to appoint an assistant to the Director to help with this major project.
