DayOne BOOKS IN ETHIOPIA

Earlier this year we received a request to supply a number of children’s colouring books for use in Ethiopia. Our contact was Brenda Piper who would be responsible for distribution among needy young people.

Digafe is the co-ordinator of all the youth work in over one hundred Christian Churches throughout Ethiopia. Thousands of children are being reached through these churches and the colouring books are proving to be a valuable resource. Not only are the pictures useful, but the text will also be translated for use.

BRENDA TELLS DIGAFE’S STORY

Digafe is about thirty-six years of age and has a remarkable testimony. His father died soon after he was born and his mother believed it was because his father had displeased a spirit. For many years throughout his childhood, Digafe was forced to go to a witchdoctor’s house to worship this spirit several hours a day, to prevent him from dying, too. When Digafe was in his teens, he went to live with an elder brother in Addis Ababa, the capital, where he attended a high school. A Christian lady lived next door and every day invited Digafe to go into her humble home to hear a Bible story. Digafe kept all these things in his heart when he returned to live with his mother. When living back home, he was forced to worship the evil spirit again at the witchdoctor’s house. Finally, Digafe was invited to go to a Christian conference held in Addis Ababa by someone he had previously met. It was here that he gave his life to Jesus Christ and truly experienced the new birth by the power of the Holy Spirit. When Digafe returned to his mother, he told her that he was never going to worship the spirit again. His mother went and told the witchdoctor, who told her that Digafe would die in six months. His mother pleaded with him to worship the spirit but he refused. After six months had passed, Digafe was still alive. His mother went back to the witchdoctor to tell him that her son was still alive. The witchdoctor then said that he had made a mistake and that he would not live any longer than twelve months. Two weeks after the twelve months had passed, the witchdoctor died!

God truly has had his hand upon Digafe and had great plans for his life! It has been such a joy and privilege for me to work with this remarkable godly young man, who is so gifted and filled with the Holy Spirit. He is being used as a vessel to bring many into God’s Eternal Kingdom! It is he who will be encouraging the use of ‘Day One’ books.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR MINISTRY

Each year, Brenda speaks at women’s conferences in various places. Two years ago, over one thousand women gathered in the mountains for one conference. She also trains Sunday School teachers and teaches teenagers how to live a holy and fruitful life. Brenda said in her email, ‘I think the books are really good and wherever I go I will encourage a greater use of them.’
