IF THE FOUNDATIONS BE DESTROYED…
It is of no surprise that the first chapters of Genesis are being disregarded, even by many professing believers. These chapters describe the foundations of society and the very centre of them is Almighty God.
Creation
This year, many will celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin. His theory of evolution has attracted atheists throughout the world publicly to deny the existence of God. Today evolution is taught from primary schools through to universities and beyond. Those young people who believe in a Creator are often severely ridiculed for their deeply-held beliefs.
As we approach Darwin’s anniversary, the Church of England has apologised to Charles Darwin for ‘misunderstanding’ his theory of evolution. In an article on its website, the Church has outlined its modern-day position in relation to Darwin’s theory, and issued an apology addressed directly to the Victorian scientist—126 years after his death. Evidently, senior bishops wanted to atone for their predecessors’ vilifying the scientist after he put forward his theory that humans were descended from apes. The Church also wants to distance itself from fundamentalist Christians, who believe in the biblical account of the creation of the world in six literal twenty-four hour days.
The article written by Reverend Dr Malcolm Brown of the Archbishops’ Council says, ‘Charles Darwin, 200 years from your birth (in 1809), the Church of England owes you an apology for misunderstanding you and, by getting our first reaction wrong, encouraging others to misunderstand you still.’
When people deny a six-day creation, it is not difficult to see why the sabbath principle is also undermined. The one-day-in-seven is a creational institution given to us by Almighty God.
This Society is thankful for men such as Professor Stuart Burgess from Bristol University and Professor Andy McIntosh from Leeds University who hold and teach the biblical position on creation. We have been pleased to publish their material. Further books on creation will be available this year, including two magazine-format booklets, In God’s image (Stuart Burgess) and Creation and Evolution (Colin Garner).
Campaign by atheists
Early this year, bendy-buses with the slogan ‘There’s probably no God’ will be running on the streets of London. The atheist posters are the idea of the British Humanist Association (BHA) and supported by prominent atheist Professor Richard Dawkins. The BHA planned to raise only £5,500 which would be matched by Professor Dawkins. But by November 08 it had raised over £20,500. It plans to have two sets of thirty buses carrying the signs for four weeks. It may also have posters on the inside of buses as well. The BHA are considering extending the campaign to cities including Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh.
The complete slogan reads: ‘There’s probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life.’ Are these atheists hedging their bets by including the word ‘probably’? That word is not in the Christian vocabulary, we know that there IS a God, and he is the Maker of all things seen and unseen.
A notice was seen in a bank in the city of Bath. It read, ‘I need someone, whom I can trust with my future.’ The Christian knows exactly who that is!
