Two hundred and thirty years ago, William Carey complained that there was a lot of talk about reaching the heathen (even that was an improvement!) but nothing was happening. He is said to have cried out to Andrew Fuller ‘Is nothing going to be done—again?’ after one meeting.
Pastors are used to complaining about the dearth of good, brief evangelistic literature. I certainly did, and felt like Carey:‘Is nothing going to be done, again?’
Why Acts 17?
One person who read an early draft said ‘Why isn’t there anything about family life? Or about the declining standards around us? Or about how close we are to the end of the world?’ They are all good topics. But I believe the inspired apostle knew exactly what he was doing when he preached to the pagans in Athens. Their first need was not to learn how to have a good family life, but how to know God; the rest would follow. We live in pagan days. Most people do not know one end of the Bible from the other, still less any of its great stories and characters.
What they need is a session with Paul on Mars Hill! So this booklet is sent out with many prayers that God will bless it. Author and publishers alike are determined to do what they can to get it out into the churches as inexpensively as possible, and we hope to back it up very soon with a website containing much more detail on some of the questions. Nothing useful, of course, is ever accomplished without God’s blessing, and I would be very grateful for your prayers as this new resource is made known.
